Sport psychology research on coaching and emotional intelligence treats self-awareness as the actual starting point of the problem. Strong technical knowledge and strategic understanding are prerequisites for coaching, not differentiators — what separates good coaches from great ones has more to do with self-awareness, self-regulation, and the ability to read and manage emotional dynamics.

The recommended mechanism is specific: a short log kept after sessions, noting the particular situations that produced a facilitative or a debilitative reaction. Not a general mood check-in — a record of exact triggers, tied to exact moments.

The Science

A well-known meta-analysis of emotion regulation strategies found that response-focused approaches like suppression tend to be less effective than strategies that intervene earlier, before the emotional reaction has fully formed. Suppression manages the outward expression, not the underlying state — it's effortful to sustain, and it tends to leak anyway, in a clipped tone or a pause half a second too long, even when the coach believes they're hiding it.

The stronger, better-evidenced strategy is cognitive reappraisal — changing the meaning of a situation before the emotional reaction fully takes hold. It's one of the most consistently replicated findings in emotion regulation research, and the underlying mechanism behind a huge amount of cognitive behavioral practice more broadly.
